Help Protect Your Child’s Vision

The eye health of our children is incredibly important. As children develop, they rely on their vision to interpret and understand so much of the world around them. In fact, 80% of what we learn is through the eyes

6 out of 10 children who have problems reading have uncorrected vision problems. Often, the problem hasn’t been detected as the child may have never had a comprehensive eye exam with an optometrist.

At MEye Health, we value the bigger picture. Children are the future and should always be set up for success.

Get your child the support they need and schedule their next eye exam today.

When Should Your Child Have an Eye Exam?

This is a basic schedule of when to have your children’s eyes examined unless otherwise recommended by their dedicated medical professional. Children should:

  • Undergo their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months
  • Have their eyes checked around age 3 or before preschool
  • Start having annual eye exams by age 5 or 6

What to Expect from an Eye Exam

We’re proud to provide a thorough, comfortable eye exam experience for children.

We use an array of modern technology to personalize the process to meet the unique needs of each child, offering you a comprehensive assessment of their visual health while also working towards early detection of any potential diseases.

Visual acuity is an important measure in assessing how well children can see details, such as letters, numbers, or pictures, at different distances.

We take a comfortable, comprehensive approach to detecting any potential refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness.

We also take the time to assess their eye alignment and look for common issues like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes).

With our wealth of experience, we’re committed to promoting and preserving healthy vision in children.

Through careful assessment of risk factors and individualized care, we strive to offer comprehensive treatment and support for children’s visual well-being.

What to Bring to Your Child’s Eye Exam

When your child comes in for their eye exam, make sure to bring:

  • A list of medications, supplements, and eye drops they use
  • The current glasses or contact lenses they use
  • Sunglasses (for dilated eye exams)*
  • Health/OHIP card
  • Private medical insurance card**

If your child has diabetes, you may want to bring in their most recent A1c readings, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.

*We might recommend a dilated eye exam if your child is at risk of developing an eye disease. Dilating the eyes can make them sensitive to light, so please bring a pair of sunglasses for your child if they’re going to receive a dilated eye exam.

**If you would like us to bill your insurance, please email us 24 hours in advance so that we may predetermine the coverage.

Supporting Your Child’s Sight

Alongside our comprehensive eye exam process, we can also offer a range of services to help address specific concerns with your child’s vision or eye development.

These services are personalized to your child, focusing on providing comfortable experiences that help us get a clear understanding of your child’s eye care needs and what we can do to help.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is on the rise globally, particularly in the younger population. Regardless of the cause, this trend in visual health may have a far-reaching impact on kids experiencing it.

Learn more about our approach to managing it on our Myopia Prevention page.

A functional vision assessment (FVA) measures how a child uses their visual system for reading, writing, and comprehension. A child could have 20/20 vision, but how their brain processes what they see is another story.

See what we can do to help on our Functional Vision Assessment page.

More often than not, children are spending more time on digital devices for learning and leisure, which can lead to eye discomfort over time.

Learn more about symptoms and solutions on our Digital Eye Strain page.
